Giclée fine art print made after an Andreea Molocea original.

Bear masks are used in the area to which I belong (Moldovia) during the 12 days of Christmas Eve. Traditionally, they are worn by men, but in this illustration I chose to reinterpret and give this power to a woman. I believe in the symbolic reinterpretation of traditions and I believe that -at least in the imaginary- we should allow ourselves and play with the roles of women in rituals and traditions.

The ceremony of wearing these animal costumes and being embodied in a bear has a sacred character, being a ceremony in close connection with what is old and what is new, with what has died and what will be born. In the dance of the bear in this ritual, it dies and comes back to life, in a symbolic adaptation of the myth of the eternal rebirth of nature.

The illustration is about magic, about the "power of the bear" in us, about our ability, as women, to pass through inner sacred gates and come out transformed. I like to think that when something hard and painful happens to us we go through that suffering in other dimensions. I carry within me the magical belief that nothing we experience is lost and that everything transforms us. Many times when I myself go through such periods I visualize myself passing through a gate beyond which a new Me will emerge. And I like to think that I have the Bear with me, this totemic animal, supreme lord of the forests and cosmic energies.

May we all be open to transformation, may we always embrace change and may the New Year be good, fertile and full with joy!
